The Killers continue their consistent run of results (2 losses) while The Broken scored a win and a draw.

A 1 – 3 loss in the first game with FJ scoring the goal. This was followed up by a wee touch of insanity…. playing a friendly in the break between games, against the side you are due to play next.  OK yes it does keep the muscles moving but then so does a half hour of shuttle runs! The only bright spot of this friendly was FJ scoring again, though being an own goal did dampen the celebrations. Of course if we had our English Hit-man, then there would have been a pay-off in terms of injured opposition. This would have helped reduce the 4 nil loss in the ‘real’ game.

The Broken opened with a 3 nil win with two goals to Mark and another to Chris. The young lads in the opposition simply couldn’t handle the pace (or something like that). Second game and the opposition took a good 5 minutes to find their courage and turn up. Lots of missed chances for us and the score ended up nil all. Full marks to the two young lads in their team – they did really well. Sympathy goes out to the family of the man butchered by Geoff our smiling assassin.

For Jim

All Whites 4, Mexico Nil

It wasn’t a qualifier but yes it was seen as kick starting the 1982 campaign. So you were right and yet wrong….

“The All Whites would take any result against Mexico in their World Cup playoff next month, but more than 30 years ago, at a ground that holds 100,000 fewer than the famous Azteca Stadium, they humbled El Tri 4-0.

The match, at Bill McKinlay Park in 1980, is widely acknowledged as the start of New Zealand’s 1982 World Cup campaign. It was the first time Kevin Fallon was beside coach John Adshead; it also heralded a change in the make-up of the squad as Ricki Herbert, Keith McKay, Grant Turner, Steve Wooddin and John Hill made their debuts.”

Thanks

A big thank you to the guys who helped put the softball fence back up. Geoff (2), Chris, Shane, FJ and Matt (2) were the willing workers. A couple of brownie points also to Dave H who was willing but late.

The Kevin Herlihy tournament is still a big deal in NZ softball and gives the club good exposure

A wet then slippery night saw both teams record two losses each.

Killer Vees struggled with only 4 regular players and a stand in went down 0 - 5 and 3 – 5. Our regular side-line supporter Matt wore the gloves for the first time in the second game and made some good saves. More goals could have been scored but it seems Shane needed some extra time “to process the options”. The team may have lost – but that had to be the comment of the season!

The Broken also went down in both games – after leading them (2 – 3 and 2 – 4). Bridget opened her shooting account – so just Jim needing to have at least a shot. Two goals in each game from Chris – all from the right hand side and 3 from almost on the by-line. This raises 2 questions – would it be cruel to play him as a left winger? And does he actually have a left foot?

Not sure it’s a family trait but I did notice that all 3 Slones hit the ground more than once last night.

Top Goal Scorers at 30 October

A more even spread of goals sees a three way tie for top spot.

Chris’s goal from the by-line left defenders checking the side netting for holes - but it was a classic strike. While he predominantly plays in the midfield, this goal scoring exploit was achieved by his defenders side - adding to our tally.

Results from 30 October

A win and a loss for both teams on the night.

We now also have a three way tie for the Golden Boot, with Geoff, Dave H and FJ all having five each.

Some Points of note

  • The first win for the Killer Vees
  • The Broken notched up a three game winning streak
  • The Greater Alliance of United Defenders made an unofficial pact to allow the strikers to catch up in the goal scoring department. Let’s face it – we beat them in looks and physique so we have to give them a chance with something.
  • With 23 goals already, we have passed our goal tally from the Sunday league (21)
  • Jessica had her first ever shot at goal (and what a beauty it was)
  • Mark scored his first goal for the club – but he was caught out by the lightening pace set by us youngsters
  • Special lessons on how to tell the time will be held for those who struggle – you four know who I’m talking about!
  • Chris T managed to keep his shorts on (well I think he did)
  • And that old fat guy fell over his own feet – again!

Congrats also to the guys who won the quiz last week.

FJ was a machine and moved into top place

Dave H and Dave W upheld the honour of the defenders (well they have to, the other defender Dave S is crap).

It’s easy to score with your boot, any mug can head a goal - but it takes real skill to trap a ball with your eyeball and flick it past the keeper using only your eyelashes. Now that was class Geoff!

Our first derby saw the slick young talent of The Broken over come the stubborn force that is the Killer Vees 3 to 1.

The stadium was packed with chanting fans, the director boxes were full of talent scouts and the cheer leaders fawned over the two stallions wearing No. 15 for their respective teams.

Mate on mate, blue on blue, pensioner on pensioner - it was a battle of epic proportions.

In the other games - Killer Vees drew 4 - 4 and The Broken carried on their winning ways 2 - 0
